Description: This course is the continuation of AGRI 107 which emphasizes the problems and methods involved in the planning, management, and use of irrigated agricultural systems. The course addresses issues such as sustainable agriculture, agroecology, permaculture, and integrated pest management. It also explores land use techniques that conserve water and maximize yields while minimizing environmental impact. Students develop a foundation for selecting appropriate crop varieties with regard to drought tolerance, disease resistance, and cultural practices (pesticide application). The

1) Understand the concept of soil as a heterogeneous mixture of solids, liquids and gases. 2) Recognize that most organisms have a capacity to consume and convert organic material into usable energy. 3) Describe the different types of soils and their properties with emphasis on characteristics necessary for plant growth. 4) Demonstrate an understanding of major soil-plant relationships using applied experiments involving: Plant growth; water use; nutrient uptake; plant defenses; soil fertility/quality; animal production.

Description of Course: This course is designed to meet the needs of students with an interest in agricultural science and management. AGRI 109 develops advanced abilities in soil science and plant physiology, as well as plant breeding, plant nutrition, soils ecology and soil hydrology. The course focuses on solving problems related to crop production, including agriculture’s environmental impact.
