Theories of love are important to our understanding of literature because they provide a way to examine the social relationships in which we participate. This course will introduce you to theories of love that are central to literary studies and other disciplines. In particular, it will give you an introduction to romanticism and its theory of love, and also to marxist theory, psychoanalysis, feminist theories, and queer theory. During this course you will read selections from major writers such as Sophocles, Mary Shelley,

This course examines the interplay of the various genres of literature that are commonly called “love” stories. It examines the ways in which these texts create their own ethos and values, the ethical frameworks within which they operate, and how they shape readers’ perceptions of love and relationships. In addition, it focuses on the rhetoric of love as conveyed by literary writers as well as by poets and playwrights in their work. Prerequisites: None. Requirements: ENGL 202 or equivalent; ESL 003
