ENGL 317 Course Objectives

Students will:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of American Drama of the 20th Century.

2. Be able to evaluate the role of theatre in American culture

3. Recognize and discuss the developments in the art form of drama during the twentieth century.

4. Analyze the historical context within which plays are written and produced.

5. Describe and analyze dramatic techniques used by modern American playwrights.

6. Study how drama is influenced by changing social, political, economic, or cultural values.

ENGL 317 Course Pre-requisites

is a course offered at the undergraduate level in the Department of English. It is designed to introduce students to the practice of literary analysis. The course examines how writers create and express themselves through their writing. Students analyze plays, novels, poems, short stories, and essays by examining how authors use language, structure, imagery, point-of-view, characterization and other narrative elements to convey their ideas about life.

This course should be taken during your first or second semester in residence as an upper division elective for English
