The course will examine Shakespeare’s depiction of justice, including law and order. We will trace the development of the concept of law and order in his plays and the history of England’s attempts to establish a code of law, including common law (e.g., Magna Carta), statutory law (e.g., English Statute of Anne), and common law codified by William Blackstone. More specifically, we will explore how laws become enacted as well as how they are interpreted, enforced, and revised

is designed to provide students with a detailed understanding of the dramatic events, situations and characters portrayed in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. In particular, it focuses on the details that contribute to a reader’s comprehension of the play. Students should note that this course has two major components: lecture and reading. The lecture component is devoted to in-depth discussions of significant concepts from the class and literature generally. The Institute has selected a variety of genres, themes and styles of literature for Shakespeare’s plays. Students will be required to analyze how the writer has used these forms to create tension in the play. Shakespearean dramas are divided into two categories: tragedies and comedies (A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
