ENGL 337 Course Introduction

Fall 2016 Course Description: In this course we will examine the larger social, cultural and political contexts in which superhero stories are told. We will study the intersections between the superhero genre and other media, including film, television, popular culture, consumer products and politics. Through close reading of a variety of texts and viewing multiple films, comic books and related artifacts (e.g., video games), we will develop our understanding of how superheroes have been used by writers to comment on the world around us.

ENGL 337 Course Description

This course will examine the literary, social, and cultural responses to superheroes in comic books and film. Topics may include but are not limited to: aesthetics, ethics, politics, and commerce. Readings will be primarily from comic book sources (Marvel or DC), films (mainstream or superhero), and comics (mainstream or superhero). The course aims to advance understanding of a variety of issues in contemporary American culture through a consideration of the work of a number of contemporary writers and filmmakers.
