The Art of August Wilson is a new course, first offered in the Spring of 2017. In the past, students have reviewed productions of Wilson’s plays. However, this year’s focus will be on getting the most out of the playwright’s writing process and developing a better understanding of his body of work as a whole. This course will include readings from his plays, analysis through exercises, and discussion with the instructor. It is hoped that this course will help to

Course Description: “Comedy of Justice: The American Century” (1985) is a classic example of the playwright’s genre. With an introduction by the playwright and a section devoted to Wilson’s life and work, this course will take a close look at his major works in depth. Students will be given time to read extensively and write about significant aspects of these works as well as their reception. Through a wide array of readings students will be exposed to critical approaches to Wilson’s plays in order to
