We will examine how various groups of people developed and expressed their sense of self during three eras: 1) The emergence of an urban middle class; 2) The gradual development of agrarian industrialization and its impact on labor; 3) The early-twentieth-century industrial expansion that involved a transnational, multinational labor force. Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to the works of some of the most important American authors and works of U.S. working-class literature written between 1870 and 1915. The texts in this course will be examined through three lenses: cultural/ historical, theoretical, and political (for example, working-class poetry, modernist fiction, Marxism). The readings will deal with work and labor as issues of social justice as well as social and economic history. It is not a study of literature
