This course will explore the relationship between American realist poetry and American literature of the nineteenth century. We will read works by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and Mark Twain. These texts will be placed in the context of their literary and social history. Our exploration will consider both literature’s critical reception of these authors as well as their influence on early twentieth-century modernism.
