these same attitudes are employed aspredictors. As in social psychology
attitudes have become indispensable to theunderstanding of peopleâs reactions to their work and leaders. Attitudes are
thus
important in and of themselves. Knowing how satisfied people are with their work or howengaged they are is important because this contributes to their well-being and lifesatisfaction. Also
OB research has shown that attitudes are related to behaviors thatorganizations care about
such as job performance and turnover. A meta-analysis andadditional research were conducted to examine the link between attitudes and behaviorsthat relate to productivity.10 The findings strongly suggest that job satisfaction andorganizational commitment are significantly related to job performance and turnover. Theauthors conclude that job attitudes are one of the most important things for a leader toknow about their followers.Attitudes make a difference in employee behaviors such as job performance. However
thereare contingency factors that have been found to influence the relationship between attitudesand behavior.11 The importance of an attitude and the correspondence between theattitude and the behavior increases the prediction of behavior.12 In other words
morespecific attitudes predict more specific behaviors. For example
it is better to ask anemployee how much they trust the boss rather than how much they trust all of the leadersin the organization to predict job performance. Social pressure from others may alsostrengthen the relationship of an attitude toward behavior. A meta-analysis of researchexamining the link between attitudes and behavior found that how accessible an attitude ismakes a difference
as well as how stable the attitude is over time.13 For example
havingdirect experience with an attitude such as having a job you love increases the relationship toperformance. Also
being asked frequently about an attitude increases the link to behavior(stability). Organizations that implement yearly employee attitude surveys may actually beincreasing the awareness of favorable aspects of the work
and this might decrease turnover.OB research has identified and researched dozens of work-related attitudes. The followingsections discuss the best-researched attitudes and how they significantly and positively affectoutcomes for organizations
such as higher job performance and lower turnover.178
